an independent magazine about independent travel

1001 Doroga: a magazine about independent travel

An independent trip does not start with a ticket. It starts with knowing what you want from it: the sea and islands, a mountain forest, the quiet of a small town or old fortresses. Here you will find calm, practical advice on choosing a destination and type of trip, linking days into a route, getting there, planning your budget and documents, and behaving in an unfamiliar place. A separate page covers air passenger rights. We do not sell tours or tickets, so we can speak plainly.

A good trip rests on one clear goal and some spare time. Everything else falls into place along the way.

— Editor's note

Where to start

I'm choosing a destination

Six types of trip (islands, mountains and national parks, small towns and villages, fortresses and castles, big cities and road trips) and how to tell which one suits you.

I want a ready-made route

A week of island-hopping by ferry, a one-day route through a national park and a weekend in a small town, with stops in order.

It's my first trip on my own

A step-by-step plan for an independent trip, from setting a goal to the checklist before you leave, with common mistakes and backup options.

I'm flying

What passengers are entitled to when a flight is delayed, cancelled or boarding is denied, and how to keep the documents you need for a claim.

Your first independent trip in five steps

  1. Define your goal

In one sentence: sea and walks, mountains and forest, old towns or fortresses. A goal helps you rule out options and stops you trying to do everything at once.

  2. Check entry rules and documents

Before buying tickets, check with official sources which documents you need for the trip and how long your passport remains valid.

  3. Sketch out the route

Mark two or three main stops and how you will travel between them. Leave at least one free day for weather, tiredness and unexpected discoveries.

  4. Buy tickets and book accommodation

Buy from the carrier or from a site the carrier links to. Keep confirmations and receipts: you will need them if a flight is delayed or cancelled.

  5. Prepare for the unexpected

Keep copies of your documents, your accommodation address available offline and the number 112, the single emergency number in EU countries and in Russia.

Common questions in brief

Is this the same "1001 Doroga" site that used to be here?

No. A travel site run by a different owner used to operate on this domain. The current magazine has no connection with it, and the old articles have not been preserved and will not be restored.

Can I buy a tour or a ticket from you?

No. We do not sell tours or tickets and do not work with travel agencies or carriers. We only explain how to plan a trip on your own.

Do you publish prices and timetables?

No. Prices, timetables and entry rules change too often. Up-to-date information is published by carriers and official sources, and we tell you where to find it.

Do you rank countries and hotels?

No. We do not publish unverifiable ratings or reviews. Instead, we explain what to look for when choosing a destination that fits your goal.

About the project

1001 Doroga is an independent magazine about independent travel. A travel site called "1001 Doroga", run by a different owner, used to operate on this domain; the current magazine has no connection with it, and the old articles have not been preserved and will not be restored. A few old addresses now hold short reference notes, listed in the site footer.

We write about what helps on a trip without a travel agency: how to choose a destination and type of trip, plan a route and get around, plan your budget and documents, behave in protected natural areas, and what to know about air passenger rights. We do not publish specific prices, timetables or opening hours; these are best checked with official sources.
