Old fortresses, castles and estates are among the most rewarding goals of an independent trip: they tell the story of a place better than any guidebook. Natural sites (a beech forest, a mountain valley, a lake, a stretch of coast) call for different preparation and different rules. Below are the types of place, how to see them and what to check in advance. There are no opening hours, prices or ratings here: check visiting conditions on official websites.
A fortress is best understood from its walls: where the road came from, where the water was, what it protected. Climb up before you read the signs.
How this section works: it describes types of place, not specific sites. Admission conditions, opening hours and photography rules are set by the museums and site administrations themselves.
Fortresses, castles and old estates
Five types of historic site and what to look out for.
Fortress on a headland
Where: On a high river bank or sea cliff, often outside the modern centre
Walls and towers built where the shore offered protection on several sides. It usually gives the best view of the surrounding area.
Tip: Wear comfortable shoes, as the stones can be slippery. Check whether the walls are open to walk along and until what time.
Town wall
Where: Around the old town; the gates often remain the main entrance to the centre
The remains of fortifications help you see where the town ended in the past and how it grew afterwards.
Tip: Walk along the wall on both the outside and the inside: it makes it easier to spot gates, towers and traces of rebuilding.
Castle
Where: On a hill above the town or in the surrounding area; often houses a museum
A residence with living quarters, a courtyard and fortifications; many castles were rebuilt over time and combine different periods.
Tip: Check whether the exhibition is open and whether you can climb the tower. Some rooms may be closed for restoration.
Estate with a park
Where: In a village or suburb, often by a river or pond
A main house, side wings, outbuildings and a park. Sometimes the house has not survived and the wings are used as a school or museum.
Tip: Find out in advance whether the grounds are open to visitors: if the building houses a school or an institution, access may be restricted.
Ancient settlement
Where: Usually on a shore or high ground, often within a protected area
Remains of streets, foundations and walls of an ancient settlement. Best seen with a guided tour or an audio guide.
Tip: Stay on the paths and do not pick up finds: this is prohibited at archaeological sites. In hot weather, come in the morning.
Natural sites
Four types of natural site and how to prepare for them.
Beech forest
Where: Mountain slopes; some old beech forests of the Carpathians are part of a UNESCO site
Tall trees, shade and a soft forest floor. Example: the beech forests of Uzh National Nature Park.
Tip: Stay on the waymarked trail: it is easy to lose your bearings in a forest. Save an offline map.
Mountain valley
Where: Along a mountain river, often at the start of trails
A river, meadows and villages in the valley make a convenient base for day hikes.
Tip: Mountain weather changes quickly. Bring a warm layer and a rain jacket, even in summer.
Lake
Where: In the mountains, in a forest or on the plains
A place for a walk and a rest. Swimming is not allowed everywhere.
Tip: Check the rules on swimming and lighting fires with the site administration.
Sea coast
Where: Beaches, rocky coves and coastal paths
Walks along the sea, coves and lighthouses, especially on islands.
Tip: Watch out for sun and water. Stay off the rocks in a storm and take tides into account where there are any.
